The Isle of Mull, located off the west coast of Scotland, is famous throughout the motor sport community for hosting The Tunnocks Tour of Mull - affectionately known as "the best rally in the world". In 2004 local resident and rally driver Steve Davies conceived the idea of Bear Cub Rally Sport.
The concept of the "Bear Cubs" was to provide a way of getting the village's youngsters involved in rallying, almost all of whom have a huge interest in the sport but are either too young to compete themselves or find the cost of rallying prohibitive. The idea was met with huge local enthusiasm and the Bear Cubs agreed on the target of building a car of their own to compete in the 2005 Tunnocks Tour of Mull. In an effort to gain help and sponsorship to make the project happen our original brochure was written and sent off to companies and individuals, on the island and nationwide, with an involvement in motor sport. We encountered a huge amount of support for the Bear Cubs and soon had gathered enough sponsorship money, parts donations and helping hands to make the dream of building our own car a reality.
Over the next year the car was built from scratch from a written-off Vauxhall Corsa road car. The response to the completed rally car was amazing, with many more offers of help and sponsorship flooding in. Less than a year after the project was first mooted we had a fully fledged rally car, a fully equipped driver and co-driver, a service crew and an entry to the 2005 Tour of Mull. Our first rally was a great success with mixed crew of John and Heather Maccrone finishing the rally in 14th position in the trophy section and winning the "Spirit of the rally" award.
Since then Bear Cub Rally Sport has continued to be a great success; entering 8 rallies and winning numerous trophies, fans and support all over the country; from Mull itself, (through competing in both the Tour of Mull and the Mull Forest Stages Rally), to the North-West of England through competing in the North West Stages Rally based in Blackpool. The core of the team currently consists of eight youngsters from the ages of 14-20 and of course Steve at 20+++.
Bear Cub Rally Sport has helped us all with a fantastic chance to get involved in motorsport and motorsport related careers with two of the Bear Cubs becoming apprentice mechanics and five team members going on to study motorsport related degrees.
